Kirtan is a very different kind of music. Many years ago in India it begun as a spiritual practice as a way for everyday people to connect with the divine. It's based on ancient chants that are sung in Sanskrit. If listened with intention, Kirtan has a way of quietly soothing the mind of its constant chatter, putting you in a meditative and joyful mood. A sing-along type of concert, it is encouraged to chant along with the musicians, as it contributes to lifting the transformative energy that forms.
Everyone sits on the floor with cushions during a concert. There is little distinction from the musicians to the audience. ( usually it's the ones with the big instruments … ) The Wallah, also know as the concert leader, sings the mantra, which follows by a response by the audience. While singing with others, you experience a deep rooting and connection to your surroundings and the other beautiful souls around you.
